Olive Midi Dress

Thursday, December 11, 2014

Dress: H&M (also worn here)
Sweater: Sheinside (similar here)
Bag: Vintage Louis Vuitton
Sunglasses: Prada

Quick post because I am literally buried in vomit (sick kids) emails (work) and papers (addressing 5 million holiday cards - will share the photo shoot results soon!).  This past weekend we headed out to Malibu Country Mart.  There is nothing country-mart-ish about this place, unless you think stores like John Varvatos and Kitson are country.  The name is definitely misleading.  Anyway, we had a really nice, relaxing afternoon with the kiddos decorating holiday stockings, getting their faces painted (they refused to wash it off for 24 hours, and I indulged them) shopping, and playing on the playground.  Unfortch, my little one contracted an ear infection almost immediately after this (why are playgrounds and human beings so disgusting?  At times I feel like the earth is one giant petri dish) so needless to say it's been a rough week, sleep-wise for us.

On the way home we pulled over on the PCH because the kids wanted to build sandcastles and get their feet wet in the ocean.  The ocean was way too cold so I didn't allow anyone's anything to get wet, but it was hard to resist playing in the sand with them.  Even in this dress and these boots.

Navy Leather

Shirt: H&M
Pants: J Brand
Shoes: Alejandro Ingelmo
Scarf: Louis Vuitton (also worn here)
Wallet: Louis Vuitton
Sunglasses: Prada

Get ready to be sick of seeing me in leather pants because it's happening, meaning they are finally coming out to play.  Not only did I get these in black, but I saw them in navy blue and was like awww yeah, I need these too.  My train of thought went something like this: "Wait - are those blue? OMG I love them.  But what would I wear them with? Well, denim is blue, and I wear jeans like 5 days a week - yup, you bluesies are coming with ME."

So essentially, I justified my purchase by figuring that these pants in this blue color would be less offensive during the day than their black counterparts, and so I would wear them just as often as the black.  So far that's actually been true.  Let's revisit this topic in 30-60 days.

Versatile

Top: Urban Outfitters, old (also worn here)
Pants: Maje (also worn here)
Shoes: Zara
Clutch: Louis Vuitton
Sunglasses: Chanel

I used to be one of those people who bought something in every single color if I really loved it.  After doing that for a few years (ok ok fine, my entire 20s, basically) I ended up with multiple skirts, tops, sweaters, etc. that just sat around never being worn because even though I liked the style or material or whatever, the color/print just wasn't for me.  I think I just figured that I'd find ways to wear it because I loved the fit or style so much, even if the color and pattern wasn't really my thing.  I would even fool myself into thinking that I'd start wearing colors I hate (like lilac, for example) because it was a piece that I liked in every other way.  That lilac sweater went to goodwill a few years back, with the tag on it - womp womp.

I've stopped wasting my money that way, and now I only buy something if I'm in love with every part of it - the fit, the color, the print AND the material.  And even then, it has to fit the rule of three before it comes home with me.  Like these pants, for example - on the hanger they looked pretty shitty in terms of shape, but the print is what caught my eye so I gave them a try.  When I put them on, the material felt great and they were flattering (love me a high waist).  I started immediately thinking of things I had that I could wear them with.  Am I out looking for more printed pants? Nope.  This ONE, all-around great pair is enough for me.

White Midi Shift

Dress: Zara
Shoes: Aminah Abdul-Jillil
Bag: Vintage Louis Vuitton "Monceau"
Sunglasses: Prada

White dresses are hard.  They can look super slutty or completely prudish if you make the wrong choice in cut and fabric.  And they are almost always see-through to some degree.  Until I found this one, my only other white dress was this one, which I rarely ever wear because it's see through and is technically a maternity dress (I was having a food baby at brunch that day so I wore it, ok?).

This one is pretty much perfect - thick knit material that doesn't require undergarments beyond the norm, and my favorite length lately.  Not too tight, but not too precious, and definitely makes a bold I-follow-fashion-and-you-just-don't-get-it-because-you-are-basic-but-you-will-when-you-see-that-shit-in-9-out-of-10-mall-stores kind of statement (I know my fellow fashionistas will feel me on that one).

Top: Zara
Jeans: Current Elliott "Stiletto"
Shoes: Alejandro Ingelmo
Sunglasses: Prada
Bag: Vintage Louis Vuitton "Monceau"
Ear Jackets: Nasty Gal

You guys, I put this outfit on and just felt so good in it.  Everything about it is what I love about casual day-to-day dressing: basics with a twist, high-quality simple pieces, shit you'll wear 24/7 and look put together and expensive every time, yet still be comfortable (ever tried on a pair of C/E jeans? then you know what I mean).  And, honestly, I almost cried when I saw these shoes at Nordstrom Rack for 75% off.  Alejandro Ingelmo shoes are usually sexy, high, uncomfortable and expensive.  But these are FLATS! And still sexy! The shoe-angels smiled on me, I foolishly thought.

So, I laced up my sassy spunky Ingelmo flats and went onward with my day.  Until, around 2pm, I realized that those shoe-angels were devils in disguise, and I had been tricked.  I wanted to throw these shoes in the garbage (ok maybe not really, but I came close) because they pinched my feet and hurt so bad.  It was like blister city all over the backs of my heels.  They are so STIFF.  And here I had bought them because they are flats, and flats are supposed to be comfortable.  Anyway, I remain hopeful, because they are 100% leather inside and out, which means they will stretch and conform as I wear them more and more.  And they really are so gorgeous and unique.  I feel like breaking shoes in is like losing your virginity.  The first few times you're like "god this sucks," and then once you get them broken in it's more like "how did I live without you?"

Denim Bermudas

Top: ASOS, old (also worn here)
Shorts: Joe's Jeans, old
Shoes: Boutique 9
Clutch: Louis Vuitton
Sunglasses: Ray Ban

Denim shorts of all lengths and proportions are a major DO right now (just make sure you DO it right).  I had put these away for a solid two years, and in the midst of packing found them way way at the bottom of my denim pile.  Just in time for summer.

Top: American Eagle (also worn here)
Skirt: Zara (also worn here and here)
Shoes: Sigerson Morrison
Clutch: Louis Vuitton
Sunglasses: Chanel
Rings: H&M

Just trying to get through the week in some tried and true pieces.  I find it much easier to dress for work in the Fall and Winter.  Probably because Spring fashion = cheerful whereas work = not.  I'll try harder next time.
