One of the things that blows my mind about living here is how drastically different things are just a short drive outside of L.A.  In an hour and a half you can be either in the desert, or somewhere as Mediterranean looking as Santa Barbara wine country.  The change in the demographics of the population is also striking (it appears all the white people in California have relocated outside L.A.'s borders), but I'll save that for another post.  

I'd never been to a winery before, so I had no idea what to wear.  I figured we'd be walking in some dirt, so I wore comfortable shoes.  The dress seemed like a good option for the hot weather outside, plus it's breezy (aka loose) so covers any pooch from drinking and eating.  At the last minute I grabbed the sweater because it's California and you just never know, and it turned out to be a good thing, because the tasting room in the winery was pretty cold.  All in all, because I don't give myself too many options (I don't have these items in multiple colors, just the ones I love) I put myself together in 20 minutes and was out the door.

Men really have it easy.  I can go on and on about how they don't have to wear thongs, makeup, or high heels, they don't have to sit down in public restrooms, they can leave their leg hair right where it is, and so on and so forth.  They have us women beat when it comes to comfort, especially in the underwear and clothing department - have you ever tried on a pair of boxer briefs?  Amazing.  They make the best pajamas (is that weird?).

Anyway, this cardigan I stole from my husband to wear on our bike ride around Santa Barbara is no exception.  The sun was hot but the air was chilly and I couldn't just ride around in my white tank (hello, nipples), and the only other jacket I had was my black suede fringe one, which would have been silly.  I honestly just took the cardigan because it was my only other option, but I ended up liking the look, especially because it is double breasted so almost references a blazer.  You guys know I LOVE a blazer.  Plus, oversize cocoon-shaped silhouettes are a thing now anyway, so this actually looked pretty current and I didn't feel like a sloppy bum when we stopped at a few of the wine tasting rooms in downtown SB.  I'll probably be stealing more baggy cardigans to wear over more tight clothes in the near future.

Between the architecture and the weirdos roaming around the place, there's something about New Orleans that doesn't feel real.  Like you're on a movie set, because everything is so eccentric it just doesn't make sense.  You know what else didn't make sense? This outfit while walking around in 85 degrees with 100% humidity. As soon as we got in the car though, I was comfy for the 9 hour trip to San Antonio.

In my mind, Hell looks and feels like the stretch of I-10 between West Texas and Arizona.  This was actually between Arizona and California, which still feels like Hell, but is a bit more scenic.

First stop on our cross-country road trip was New Orleans.  Not sure what else people do in New Orleans except eat amazingly delicious Cajun and Creole food and drink cocktails with bourbon in them.  Oh, and sweat because it's sticky as shit in the bayou.  I was pretty overdressed everywhere we went, but the drawstring and loose fit of this jumpsuit was necessary for dinner at Bon Ton Cafe.  On our way out of Louisiana we stopped in Lafayette and ate the real deal at a place called Dwight's, but the restaurants in the French Quarter did not disappoint.

Trinidad Carnival 2014 Photo Diary

Too hot to function in Trinidad & Tobago.  White shirts (and a swimsuit underneath) hide sweat.  Bright colors distract and blend in with surroundings.
