Summer Drank: Strawberry Basil Tequila Cocktail

Wednesday, June 26, 2013

My hubby and I love us a good cocktail.  My poison of choice is usually tequila, and since it's summer time and strawberries are everywhere, they were a no-brainer.  However I don't like super sweet drinks, so I searched for a recipe that incorporated some savory and tart ingredients to counteract the sweetness of the berries.  Swapped out the simple syrup for agave nectar to cut down on the sugar.  The result was delicious - fresh, slightly tart and a hint of balsamic for a savory kick.

Ingredients:
1 1/2 oz. reposado tequila
3/4 oz. fresh lime juice
1 oz. agave nectar
3 fresh strawberries, quartered
3 fresh basil leaves
1/8 oz. balsamic vinegar

Tools:
muddler, shaker, strainer

Muddle the strawberries, basil leaves, and balsamic vinegar in a shaker.  Add the remaining ingredients, top off with ice, and shake for 15-20 seconds.

Strain into a chilled glass of your choice.  I love these classic flutes from Crate & Barrel.  They make any cocktail look gorg.

It should be a nice pink color with a tiny bit of strawberry pulp.  If you get any basil pieces, strain again.  No one wants bits of greenery stuck in their teeth.

Don't forget to instagram your drink-mixing prowess.  (Also, don't cut yourself by muddling too vigorously like I did - hence the band-aid).

Enjoy!
