The Devil Wears Prada

Wednesday, January 21, 2015

Can you believe this movie is 8 years old?  It feels like only yesterday I was all "go Andy go! You get that manuscript!"  Probably because it actually was the other day,  I watched it again like 2 weeks ago #sorrynotsorry.  And this time, it occurred to me that the fashion in this movie is amazing because Patricia Field managed to reference so many different fashion eras in one movie while making them all relevant for today.  There was some 60s Jackie O, some 80s power suit action, a little 70s glam with some fur, and even a 90s nod with the grungy newsboy hat (below) and some plaid thrown in here and there.  And best of all, these clothes all made us feel like we could do it ourselves - nothing was too threatening or over the top costumey.  It projected a more relatable NYC, rather than the fantasy world she dreamed up for Carrie and co. in Sex and the City. Love love love.

See those sheer black tights Anne Hathaway is wearing? I think I wore those to every party I went to from 1991-1997.
That coat, though. YUM.  Eggplant.  So glam.

I would wear this now.  Like today. And for always.  That layered chain look will never get old, thank you Mr. T and Madonna.
Oh hello Jackie.  White gloves, emerald green and leopard trimmings need no explanation.

More fur more drama.  Love this 80s peep toe with stockings. Overall this look is pretty busy and probably only works on camera but still striking.
All black errythang always works.  These scream a little 90s to me, in a good way.  I think its the accessories and hair.

The Chanel boots? Uh huh, I am.
She made me want to wear a hat and I hate hats on me.  Also, way back when, I definitely tried this layered shirt look in real life, and got some weird but interested looks.  I'll take it.

Since award season has officially begun, I would like to apologize in advance for the inevitable lack of posts over the next few weeks (another clue for those of you wondering what I've been up to), and also share with you what's been rocking my world in terms of red carpet inspiration.  I know different people have different ideas when it comes to red carpet dressing, but I for one just want these ladies to wow me and take my breath away.  That's all.  Last year's Golden Globes was a study in streamlined, modern design, and most of the major attendees had very few (or zero) bells and whistles (aka bling and beading).  Fucking, yawn.  Red carpets are about moments - like, unforgettable, mind-blowing moments that you remember for years.  I want to see these celebs, the most beautiful people in the world, in dresses that are only appropriate in that exact moment.  I want the DRAMA, like shock me bitches.  In a good way, of course.

There are so many gorgeous gowns out there, but when you work behind the scenes you know it's not just about the dress - it's gotta be the right dress on the right woman at the right time with the right hair, makeup, jewels, shoes and clutch.  All of these dresses below, to me, have that potential.   You can find these plus more of what I love  on my Pinterest board  entitled "red carpet worthy."

You guys, I'm going to be honest - it has been way too hot to get dressed in anything that is even remotely photographable.  I've been bitching about it on my Instagram, but L.A. has been in the midst of a horrible heat wave, my a/c broke in the middle of it (fixed now) and in typical Angeleno fashion people are walking around here like "it's cool it'll pass" while I'm raging around like an east coast lunatic trapped in an oven.

All I can do is present you with a few post-fashion week inspired pins that I've been gazing at longingly, waiting for mother nature to get a grip so I can commence living my life and wearing real clothes and makeup again.  For photo credits peruse my Pinterest.
No, I am not going to STFU about culottes, because just LOOK at how chic she looks in these suede ones.  Like a midi skirt but better because it's pants.

I need to add camel to my adventures in monochromatic dressing.  It actually never occurred to me to try it until I saw this picture, mostly because I'm brown and head-to-toe camel may be hard for me to pull off.  Stay tuned.

Jordan Dunn's new hairstyle ALMOST makes me want to stop growing my hair out and chop it again - just one more time.  And I need to get my hands on a matte orangey-red lipstick, ASAP.
Tom Ford.  Flared leg pants.  Tux.  Enough said.

It is amazing how holding this bag as a clutch, as opposed to hanging the fringe part over the shoulder, makes it look totally different.  I'm all about options.  Gimme.
What else do you need to convince you that you need a red jumpsuit in your wardrobe?

I admit it - I'm a Pinterest whore.  I find the act of swiping and pinning beautiful things very soothing (emotionally and physically).  What?  Where some people might go for a run, I reach for my iPhone and pin away.  Here are my faves this week (links to all images can be found on my Pinterest @thefancyroutine).
I mean, doesn't she just look so comfy and elegant?

Dying over this wallpaper and the gold and orange pops.  I would be SO productive if my office looked like this.

I like his use of acessories.  I bet I could convince my husband to wear accessories like these (except the belt, he'd draw the line there).

Can someone please come over and do my hair like this?

Genius use of a bar cart.

I told you - culottes are back.  This is a particularly easy and unintimidating way to wear them.

I am obsessed with everything about this entryway.  It's eclectic (code for schizophrenic) but the color scheme is chill.
Nope, not sick of crop tops yet, especially when paired with an elegant maxi skirt.  I'd totally wear this to someone else's wedding.

Shop Spotlight: SUPERMUSE

Thursday, June 6, 2013

I was so excited when I stumbled across SUPERMUSE.  The clothes are cool, streamlined and edgy but still wearable in different situations.  And most importantly of all, you get cutting edge style at amazingly affordable prices.  The key with these pieces is not to overaccesorize because the clothes by themselves are so unique.  Below are some of my favorite picks from the current collection.  The red dress is on its way to me!

Violets Are Blue dress: $139

Unfaithful dress: $89

Silver Chainmail Knit sweater: $59

History Maker skirt: $49

Get Inspired

Tuesday, May 7, 2013

Part of being fancy on a daily basis is being inspired by things around you and then making these inspirations work in your every day life.  Today's inspiration, Fancies, is the ever bad-ass Sarah Jessica Parker in her WTF-ish Met Gala getup.  Yes. She. Did.  And I love her for it.

Clearly, this is not something any of us who did not play Carrie Bradshaw on Sex And The City could or would wear on the daily (or ever).  But I'd definitely rock some feathers like this, or this, or maybe a sweet bejeweled necklace like this.

Since we're on the topic of crazy Met Gala couture, I'd just like to give a shoutout to Beyonce.  I know I know - her dress was cray:

But just hear me out.  Some of you may remember her dress from last year's Met Gala and cringe (or swoon if you're me) at the combination of sheerness, beads, feathers, and ombre.  This year's Givenchy creation took her level of cohones to the next level, and that's what I like about it.  Confidence people - look at that SWAGGER.  Not to mention the fact that I bleed black and gold, or at least, I wear it every day.  Except, not like Bey - more like this, or this and I LOVE this dress from ASOS:

Feathers and sequins and swagger are for everyone! Because, well . . . why not?
